The proposal for a new national library for India is created as a rejection of the classical notion of the library as a dark and foreboding place. The magnificent civic structure instead celebrates light and transparency as a metaphor for the enlightenment of education and free flow of thought. The skylights of an abstract expanding wave pattern also refer to the wave of knowledge emanating forth. The sensational fenestration of columns and mullions are likened to the depth of a never ending matrix of study. Composed of six stories in two monumental buildings above ground there are also underground catacombs to protect sensitive texts and historical documents.
